New Zealand's latest Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) residence pathways are now open, creating new opportunities for skilled workers, tradespeople and technicians who want to make New Zealand their permanent home.

The changes took effect on 24 August 2026 and represent an important expansion of the Skilled Migrant Category.

There are now three Skilled Migrant Category pathways to residence:

• The existing points-based Skilled Migrant Category pathway

• The new Skilled Work Experience pathway

• The new Trades and Technician pathway

For some migrants who previously had limited options for residence, these changes could be significant. However, determining whether you qualify is not as simple as looking at your job title or counting how many years you have worked.

Your occupation, qualifications, work experience, New Zealand employment, pay rate and when that experience was gained can all affect your eligibility. If residence is your long-term goal, this is a good time to have your circumstances professionally assessed.

What Has Changed with the Skilled Migrant Category?

The Skilled Migrant Category has traditionally provided residence opportunities for highly skilled migrants through a points-based system. That pathway remains available, with some changes to its settings.

The major development from 24 August 2026 is the introduction of two additional pathways designed to recognise different types of skilled workers.

Trades and Technician Pathway

The new Trades and Technician pathway creates residence opportunities for people working in specified eligible trade and technical occupations. This is particularly significant because some experienced tradespeople have historically found it difficult to establish a realistic pathway to New Zealand residence.

The new pathway considers factors including an applicant's:

• Occupation

• Qualifications

• Relevant work experience

• Skilled employment in New Zealand

• Remuneration

There is an official list of occupations that can potentially qualify. However, appearing to work in an eligible occupation does not automatically mean you meet the residence requirements. Your complete employment and qualification history needs to be considered.

Skilled Work Experience Pathway

The new Skilled Work Experience pathway creates another option for experienced migrants working in skilled occupations. Rather than relying solely on qualifications or occupational registration, this pathway places greater emphasis on a person's history of skilled employment.

This could provide an important opportunity for people who have built substantial experience in their profession but previously struggled to meet the requirements of the points-based SMC system. Again, there are specific requirements around the type of employment, experience and remuneration that can qualify.

Who Could Benefit from the New SMC Pathways?

The changes could potentially benefit a broad range of migrants already working in New Zealand.

In particular, we expect considerable interest from experienced:

• Tradespeople

• Technicians

• Engineering workers

• Automotive workers

• Electrical workers

• Telecommunications workers

• Refrigeration and air-conditioning workers

• Manufacturing workers

• Food production and processing workers

• Other skilled professionals

However, Immigration New Zealand has specific occupational requirements. Two people with similar job titles may receive different eligibility outcomes depending on their actual duties, qualifications, employment history and current circumstances.

That is why we recommend obtaining an individual assessment rather than relying on what happened with a colleague or friend.

Could You Already Be Eligible for New Zealand Residence?

Potentially. One of the most exciting aspects of the changes is that some migrants may already have much of the employment experience required.

Someone who has spent several years working overseas followed by skilled employment in New Zealand could potentially be in a very different position under the new pathways. Likewise, someone who previously looked at the Skilled Migrant Category and decided they could not qualify may now have another option.

If you had your residence eligibility assessed previously, it may therefore be worth reviewing your circumstances again.

Having the Right Job Is Only Part of the Assessment

One point we want migrants to understand is that an eligible occupation does not automatically equal residence eligibility.

There can be additional requirements relating to matters such as:

• Qualifications

• When qualifications were obtained

• Relevant work experience

• New Zealand skilled employment

• Pay rates

• English language ability

• Health and character

• The evidence available to establish your employment history

Some requirements can be surprisingly technical. For example, having many years of experience does not necessarily mean all of those years can be counted. Likewise, holding a qualification does not necessarily mean it meets the particular requirement applying to your pathway. This is where individual assessment becomes important.

Your Previous Overseas Experience Could Be Important

Migrants sometimes assume that only their New Zealand employment matters for residence.

Under the new pathways, relevant overseas experience can also be important. For someone who arrived in New Zealand after already building a substantial career overseas, this could significantly affect their potential eligibility.

However, previous employment needs to meet the applicable requirements and be supported by appropriate evidence. We therefore recommend having your employment history reviewed before assuming that particular periods of experience will—or will not—count.

Your Pay Rate Can Affect Your Residence Pathway

Remuneration continues to play an important role within the Skilled Migrant Category.

The required rate can depend on the particular pathway and circumstances. This is another area where applicants can easily make incorrect assumptions.

Being paid above the minimum wage or even earning what would generally be considered a good salary, does not necessarily mean you satisfy the remuneration requirement for your particular residence pathway. Conversely, someone who previously thought their pay prevented them from qualifying may now be in a different position.

Qualifications Can Make a Significant Difference

Qualifications are particularly important under the new Trades and Technician pathway and continue to play a role within the wider Skilled Migrant Category. If you hold an overseas trade, technical or professional qualification, it may need to be considered as part of your residence assessment.

The level of the qualification, its relevance and when it was obtained can all potentially matter. We see applicants who have substantial work experience but have never had their overseas qualifications properly considered from a New Zealand immigration perspective.

If that applies to you, the new SMC changes provide another reason to review your position.

Don't Assume You Don't Qualify Because Someone Else Didn't

Immigration advice shared between friends, colleagues and social media groups can be particularly risky following major policy changes.

You may hear: "My friend is a technician and he qualifies."

Or: "Someone at my company was told this occupation isn't eligible."

Neither statement necessarily tells you anything about your own eligibility.

Your circumstances may be different because of your:

• Employment history

• Qualification

• Occupation

• Pay

• New Zealand experience

• Age

• Family circumstances

Residence assessments are individual.

What If You Don't Qualify Yet?

Finding out that you don't qualify today doesn't necessarily mean residence is impossible.

In fact, one of the biggest advantages of obtaining advice early is understanding what is missing.

You may be closer than you think. Depending on your circumstances, you may need additional skilled work experience, a change in remuneration, further career progression or another requirement to be addressed. Knowing this now allows you to plan.

Discovering it shortly before your current visa expires can leave you with far fewer options.

Residence Should Be Planned, Not Left Until the Last Minute

A small decision made today could potentially affect when—or whether—you qualify for residence later.

Previously Told You Didn't Qualify? It May Be Worth Checking Again

This is particularly important. If you previously received advice that you did not qualify for Skilled Migrant Category residence, that assessment may have been based on the immigration settings that applied at the time.

The introduction of the Trades and Technician and Skilled Work Experience pathways mean your options may now be different.

Your circumstances may also have changed. You may have accumulated additional New Zealand experience, increased your pay, gained a qualification or progressed into another occupation. A fresh assessment could therefore produce a very different result.
